Where to donate your gently-used items in Indy

If you’re anything like me, January is the perfect time to reevaluate things. Which can come in a variety of forms– setting goals for the year, making resolutions, cleaning house, etc. My intention for 2018 is balance.

A big part of that for me is making sure that I’m not bringing more ‘stuff’ into my home without first taking a hard look at the things I already own. It’s a lot of asking questions, like “Will I really use this new appliance?” or “What shirt will I get rid of once I purchase this one?” and probably the most relevant “Do I actually need this?” (Spoiler alert, the answer is almost always no).

In order to form the perfect balance and kick the year off in great fashion, I’ve set aside a number of things that I will be taking to various organizations around Indianapolis. Below are a few of my favorites and I’m sure they would welcome your donations, too!

Household Items

Exodus Refugee Immigration accepts all sorts of donations, including: couches, tables & chairs; kitchen items such as plates, cups, and bowls; and more. Check out the full list here.

After purchasing my own home, there were a few things like light fixtures that I replaced. The Habitat ReStore is the best place to take cabinets, light & cabinet fixtures, large furniture, etc. Basically, if you’re redoing your kitchen or doing any remodeling of any sort, this is the place to donate to. So long as everything is in good shape for reuse, of course!

Clothing

For the past two years, my book club has hosted a clothing swap. We’ve had a lot of fun with it, swapping styles and refreshing our wardrobes. The best part though, is that at the end we take all the remaining clothes to The Julian Center.

Sometimes I buy a blazer that I think I’m going to wear often (hello, mint green!) and I only end up wearing it a handful of times. Or I have three pantsuits and let’s be real, we’re pretty casual here at IndyHub. Dress for Success is the perfect place to take those dressier outfits for work that are still in great condition but don’t make it out of the closet very often.

I know I have at least 3-5 prom/homecoming dresses sitting in my closet that I likely will never wear again. Enter The Gifted Gown! They accept donations of new/ gently-used gowns, tuxedos and suits, men’s and women’s shoes, ties, jewelry, handbags, and accessories. Head here to learn more about their mission and see the full list of places you can drop your donations.

Bikes

I haven’t gotten to do this yet, but if you have a bike that you are no longer using, you should definitely take it to Freewheelin’ Community Bikes! Read more about the types of bikes they accept.

Pet Supplies

Most animal shelters accept all sorts of donations– food, toys, crates, pet beds, towels, etc.– check in with your local shelter to see what their needs are!

Books & Media

Indy Reads Books is the perfect place to donate your books, DVDs, audiobooks, and children’s books– learn more about what they accept here! If they aren’t able to sell it in their store on Mass Ave, they’ll list it for sale online or re-donate it to a group that can use it, to fully support literacy in Central Indiana.

So in the end, it’s a win-win situation. I get to clear up some space in my house by donating the things that would otherwise go untouched and these wonderful organizations can actually use them. The warm fuzzy feeling is a bonus, too.

Do you donate items to any other amazing groups here in Indy? Surely my list did not cover everything. If you know of any other local organizations that accept gently-used donations, share them in the comments below!
