The Beginnings

Did you know?

YPs are 2 to 3 times more likely to stay if they feel they can make a difference in their community.

IndyHub got its start in 2004 when a series of meetings were convened with a group of community leaders, economic development types and rising professionals. The purpose was to discuss the issue of attracting and retaining young professionals in Indianapolis - a priority for many, because a pipeline of talented workers would be critical for the future of Central Indiana. The term Creative Class was thrown around quite a bit, in reference to this new generation of educated and talented young people. The Creative Class has priorities different that previous generations, one of the biggest being a sense of mobility and being very willing to move for better opportunities. This creates a high demand and competitive environment for their talent.

But statistics have told us that young professionals and creative types will stay in a community if they’re personally invested – through friendships, community connections and engagement. From the start, the plan has been to encourage this generation to become more involved, and help them develop roots in Indianapolis, making them more likely to stay. Long story short, the group’s work resulted in the formation of IndyHub, formally organized in June 2005 with attraction and retention central to its mission.
