Weekdays, lunch hour and after school
School on Wheels is in need of volunteers to tutor children living in area homeless shelters and schools.
Children all around Indianapolis go back to school this August and School on Wheels seeks to recruit, train and place new volunteer tutors for its after-school and lunch hour tutoring programs. These programs provide tutoring to over 400 children experiencing homelessness in grades K-12 throughout Indianapolis.
Tutors help us break the cycle of homelessness through education. To become a School on Wheels tutor, individuals must be at least 11 years of age. Ages 11-13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tutors are asked to commit to one hour each week for a 15-17 week semester. Interested tutors must complete a volunteer application, participate in a short phone interview, pass a criminal background check and attend a training/orientation session.
As a tutor, you’ll be able to:
- Enhance the educational opportunities of homeless children.
- Demonstrate consistency and encouragement by helping a child to understand why their education is not only important, but possible.
- Become the heart and soul of School on Wheels!
