Orindytation: Lesson 8 - Beating the winter blues
Published: January 18, 2012 by David Feinberg Categories: Food & Drink Comments: 0Now that we are into January we are beginning to get into the full excitement of the Super Bowl. In a few weeks that excitement will have come and gone and I will be dreaming of warmer days in the summer. There are a few things that I really love to have on the cold days of winter to help make me feel like it’s the summer. The first is Natural Born Juicers. Their fresh juice helps provides some of the vegetables that I know my diet is missing in the winter. Then there is Lick Ice Cream with some of the most unique flavor options in the city.
Natural Born Juicers
Natural Born Juicers is not just open during the Indy Winter’s Farmers, but are there ever day at the City Market. They make fresh to order pressed juices and smoothies. Located in the farmers market, they provide freshly pressed juices and smoothies. My obsession with them is a blended juice called the Habanero Social Club with a hint of cilantro. It is a combination of Habanero and Mango blended with orange and lime. It is a bit like drinking spicy sunshine.
There are of course things other than spicy juices. There are a large number of ingredients you can customize to make your own juice or smoothie. This past week I passed on the spicy juice to try one with cabbage in it. I really didn’t know how I would feel about juiced cabbage, but it was great. I felt like I had just had something fresh picked out of my garden. Natural Born Juicers tries whenever possible to have local and organic products that go into their beverages.
If you are making your first visit to them try one of their choices with things filled with what you like, and then start to branch out. Also make sure to get your punch card, because once you buy 1, I’m sure you’ll be going back for more.
Lick Ice Cream
So I always associate ice cream with a nice warm day. I’ve found that even when it is cold outside, eating ice cream makes me feel like it is a nice warm day outside, particularly when I am captivated by the flavor combinations. So, in the winter when I’m having ice cream, there is no ice cream I want to have more than Licks! To the best of my knowledge, you can find them in any stores yet and you have to go to the Indy Winter Farmer’s Market. You can also like them on Facebook to find out where they will be. I’ll share the flavors I have bought recently, that should be enough to get you excited:
• Salted Carmel & Sage
• Bourbon Bacon and Maple Syrup
• Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Banana
• Pumpkin Butter Guinness
