  • Be Selfish, Give More.

    by Mary Catharine Grau

Remember the Friends episode when Phoebe and Joey get into an argument about whether or not a good deed can be completely selfless? (No? I sum it up in the footnote below.)  While theirs was an argument about whether it was possible to do a good deed and not feel good about it, I’ll make it one of semantics, and say that I’m with Phoebe. Selfless is defined as “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own; unselfish.” Feeling good about your actions doesn’t mean the act wasn’t done in with someone else’s needs and wishes in mind before... read on

‘Tis the holiday season and more importantly the season of giving. As we wrap up 2011 and usher in 2012 it’s the time of year where we reflect on the year that was and focus on our goals and resolutions for a new year.

While financial giving may not always be possible for young professionals, opportunities to serve while giving our time and talent to a non-profit can be the answer. Offering personal enrichment and also more fulfilling opportunities for networking, here are a few suggestions.

    1. Seek volunteer opportunities you can be passionate about. You will be more plugged into... read on

  • Orindytation: Lesson 7 - What I have learned this year

Published: December 8, 2011 by David Feinberg Categories: Civic Engagement, Networking & Social Comments: 1

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of having lunch with a fellow Hubber at my favorite lunch location: Indianapolis City Market (Vietnamese Noodle Wrap from Circle City Soups and a drink from Natural Born Juicers? Delicious!). Over lunch we had a fascinating conversation.

The first topic was a reflection on the blogs I have written so far this year. I commented that I thought they all seemed pretty darn pretentious. Almost like they take on a high and mighty tone that I know Indianapolis better than you, so you should listen to me. My friend laughed. She said the whole point of the blog... read on

  • H-A-Double L-O-Double U- Double E- N Spells Halloween

That title, or rather song, would make more sense if you were a graduate of Hinkle Creek Elementary School at some point in the late 80s. That said, it’s Halloween time, and I want to dish costumes.

I looked online at the great and powerful Google, and I saw the top dog costumes of this year. A few weeks ago on SNL (yes, I still tivo and watch this show that may or may not be on its death bed), Seth Meyers said that dressing your dog up in a costume is a way to tell your neighbors “We can’t have kids.” He said that it’s also a great way to see a bumblebee taking a number 2 (then they... read on

  • Hi, my name’s Reggie and I’m an Exhibitionist…

Well not really! Although it is an opener, or an icebreaker, I’ve used at networking events to explain my role as a trade show marketing consultant. Meeting new people and growing my network has always been fun for me. But at times it can be, well…monotonous.

We may not all have the most exciting careers. Even if we do, I think a creative way of sharing what we spend most of our waking hours doing is a great way to break the ice and leave a lasting impression. So here are a few suggestions on crafting that all important and memorable intro.

    1. Break down what you do into the most basic... read on
