IDADA’s Super Bold Event - TURF IDADA Art Pavilion
Published: January 10, 2012 by Kenan Farrell Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Culture & Diversity Comments: 1At the annual Start With Art Luncheon in September 2010, Mayor Ballard asked the Indy arts community to "Be Bold." The IDADA board took that message to heart and came up with an ambitious idea, the final result of which is now just days away. All IndyHubbers should make plans to attend TURF: IDADA Art Pavilion sometime between this Friday and Super Bowl Sunday. This event is a first-of-its-kind and has never been done in a Super Bowl host city.
The IDADA Art Pavilion consists of over 20 experiential art installations. Some of your favorite local artists (find a full list at the IDADA Turf... read on

Young Pros and Empty Pews: Why YPs Checkout of Church
Published: November 14, 2011 by indyhub Categories: Culture & Diversity Comments: 7Guest post by Ryan Byers, Reverend at Renew Young Adult Ministries at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis
Jim Collins, in his book Good to Great, argues that in order to go from good to great “you need to face the hard brutal facts.” Need a few about young professionals and the church? Take a read through these:
- YPs in their twenties make up the fastest growing rate of religiously non-affiliated people in this country. The national non-affiliation rate is 16 percent and the national rate for 18- to 29-year-olds is 31 percent.
- The rate of non-affiliated young professionals... read on

Nudes in Indy?
Published: November 7, 2011 by Kenan Farrell Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Culture & Diversity Comments: 1The nude human figure in fine art has been both celebrated and censored, with its creation and display being influenced by academia and religion and its virtue debated by everyone. This Friday night, as part of the 2011 Spirit & Place Festival – which carries the theme “The Body” – "Unclothed: Exposing the Art Nude" at StutzArtSpace will explore the question of the art nude’s place in public venues. The gallery exhibition includes 33 figurative pieces by 29 artists from Indianapolis and beyond. From 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., a panel will discuss the place of the fine art nude in public... read on

Mass Ave Needs More Art Galleries
Published: October 12, 2011 by Kenan Farrell Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Culture & Diversity Comments: 0Last week was Mass Ave's Harvest of the Arts (the new name for MAMA's annual Fall Gallery Walk). 7,000 Lilly employees spent Thursday cleaning, painting and lighting the Avenue to get it ready for the Harvest and they did a fine job.
My fears regarding my neighborhood looking like Candyland turn out to have been overblown. If anything, underwhelmed was my immediate reaction at the amount of paint spread around. I expected a color explosion to rival the Upper Haight but it's really just the curbs around the tree islands that were painted. The tree lights don't evoke Vegas or Times Square... read on

Orindytation: Lesson 5
Published: August 24, 2011 by David Feinberg Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Culture & Diversity, Food & Drink, Lifestyle & Wellness, Sustainability Comments: 0This past weekend I was visited by my brother, sister-in-law, 8-year-old nephew and 11-year-old niece. This was the third visit in the past two years, so we passed on some of our typical activities, like going to The Children’s Museum. As I reflected on the weekend I realized our exploits would be the perfect thing to share. All of our activities were geared towards the kids, but would be just as enjoyable for a group of twenty-somethings to forty-somethings who have come to visit.
Our first stop was Jockamo’s in Irvington for lunch. The easiest way to describe Jockamo is to say they have... read on

You Don’t Know Jack Special Edition: Come One, Come All!
Published: August 17, 2011 by Jill Thixton Categories: Arts & Entertainment, Civic Engagement, Culture & Diversity, Fashion & Style, Food & Drink, Lifestyle & Wellness, Networking & Social, Professional Development Comments: 0ArtSparkle: Circus under the Stars is this Saturday, August 20th, 7pm.
I consider myself pretty excitable in the first place but when I first laid eyes on the Indianapolis Art Center’s annual summer gala fundraiser theme I literally screeched with delight. This year’s ArtSparkle leitmotif is Circus Under the Stars! And when I say circus, I’m not talking about a few clowns juggling some balls. I’m talking one night only of real life side-show acts, rare circus posters, food AND drinks outdoors on the grounds of the Indianapolis Arts Center. If you attended the Microbrewers Festival this... read on

Kallie’s Keys to PDA: The Business of Golf
Published: August 16, 2011 by Kallie Bonnell Categories: Culture & Diversity, Lifestyle & Wellness, Networking & Social, Professional Development Comments: 1Golf is a game very close to my heart. I’ve played the majority of my life, which has given me insight into many different “types” of golf. Let’s see; there is the skill-developing type, competitive type, the grab-a-cooler and go with your buddies type and, of course, the professional type.
The professional type of golf can be intimidating. Maybe you don’t golf but have been asked to play in an outing. Or maybe you do, sorta-kinda play golf, but are not as advanced as the other members of your foursome.
If that’s the case, check out a few introductory but extremely important points of... read on
