Be election ready!
Published: April 19, 2012 by indyhub Categories: Civic Engagement Comments: 0A note to Hubbers from Beth White, Marion County Clerk
Election Day is just a few short weeks away, and I want to make sure you are election ready. The most important message you can help us spread is know where you go to vote. There are significant changes to polling locations this election because Mayor Ballard redrew the county’s precinct lines in late 2011 and picked new voting sites. We estimate one in three Marion County voters will have a new place to vote on Election Day.
Many voters will be caught unaware about these changes until they go to vote on Tuesday, May 8, and I don’t... read on

The Great Green Hope: Let’s Talk Hope
Published: March 1, 2012 by Ryan Puckett Categories: Civic Engagement, Sustainability Comments: 1When I started blogging for IndyHub a few years ago, Karissa Hulse encouraged me to come up with a name for my posts that would make a statement. After some deliberation, I decided upon “The Great Green Hope”. There are several things going on within that name, but I want to focus on hope.
According to one definition I found, hope means to desire something with the expectation of obtainment. In other words, you want something to happen and you expect that it will happen. That’s my attitude with my posts – I want things that make our city more eco-conscious to happen and I expect that they... read on

Looking in for Inspiration
Published: February 29, 2012 by Giving Sum Categories: Civic Engagement, Lifestyle & Wellness Comments: 0by Brendan Crews
“Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant. There is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited by sparks.” Johann Gottfried Von Herder (German philosopher) said that over 200 years ago, yet not a day goes by that someone doesn’t read a book, listen to a song, or watch a film with the intention of finding that spark and becoming inspired.
Let me start by asking you three questions. First, when was the last time you felt inspired… truly and deeply inspired? I don’t mean happy or hopeful, energetic or excited. I mean jump up and take action... read on

Be Selfish, Give More.
Published: January 26, 2012 by Giving Sum Categories: Civic Engagement, Networking & Social, Professional Development Comments: 3by Mary Catharine Grau
Remember the Friends episode when Phoebe and Joey get into an argument about whether or not a good deed can be completely selfless? (No? I sum it up in the footnote below.) While theirs was an argument about whether it was possible to do a good deed and not feel good about it, I’ll make it one of semantics, and say that I’m with Phoebe. Selfless is defined as “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own; unselfish.” Feeling good about your actions doesn’t mean the act wasn’t done in with someone else’s needs and wishes in mind before... read on

Published: January 16, 2012 by Ryan Puckett Categories: Civic Engagement, Sustainability Comments: 0If you are reading this blog post, I am making a few assumptions about you.
- You are a 20, 30 or 40-something living in or near Indianapolis.
- You are passionate about Indy and you’re excited about its future.
- You are interested in Indianapolis becoming a more sustainable city and believe a more robust transit system would be a huge step in the right direction.
- You are related to me or you are an old friend and are reading this just to be nice.
Whether or not any of these are true, the effort to improve mass transit in Central Indiana is at a critical point and I’ve... read on

Get Connected With Reg: YP’s Networking with NP’s
Published: December 15, 2011 by Reggie Lyons Categories: Civic Engagement, Networking & Social, Professional Development Comments: 0‘Tis the holiday season and more importantly the season of giving. As we wrap up 2011 and usher in 2012 it’s the time of year where we reflect on the year that was and focus on our goals and resolutions for a new year.
While financial giving may not always be possible for young professionals, opportunities to serve while giving our time and talent to a non-profit can be the answer. Offering personal enrichment and also more fulfilling opportunities for networking, here are a few suggestions.
1. Seek volunteer opportunities you can be passionate about. You will be more plugged into... read on

Orindytation: Lesson 7 - What I have learned this year
Published: December 8, 2011 by David Feinberg Categories: Civic Engagement, Networking & Social Comments: 1A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of having lunch with a fellow Hubber at my favorite lunch location: Indianapolis City Market (Vietnamese Noodle Wrap from Circle City Soups and a drink from Natural Born Juicers? Delicious!). Over lunch we had a fascinating conversation.
The first topic was a reflection on the blogs I have written so far this year. I commented that I thought they all seemed pretty darn pretentious. Almost like they take on a high and mighty tone that I know Indianapolis better than you, so you should listen to me. My friend laughed. She said the whole point of the blog... read on
