  • Suz in the City: Friendship in 2010

Published: April 26, 2010 by Suzanne Flynn Categories: Networking & Social Comments: 0

In the heavy technological age in which we all find ourselves, sometimes it's hard to keep in touch with old friends. I know what you're thinking. "But, Suz: I'm on Facebook, and I've reconnected with 300 of my old friends and see pictures of their families, their dogs, and their vacations. You are so crazy yet well dressed." (OK, I added the "well dressed part" you probably weren't thinking that).

I agree that social networking sites are great for reconnecting with long lost friends and acquaintances. However, if you're just peering in like a welcome Peeping Tom, that's not really... read on

  • Kallie’s Keys to PDA: Work is a Team Sport

Published: March 16, 2010 by Kallie Bonnell Categories: Networking & Social, Professional Development Comments: 0

This is my favorite time of year. Thankfully, my seasonal affective disorder has melted away with the snow and has since been replaced with an eager anticipation for March Madness. We Hoosiers are awfully lucky; we’re known for our contributions to the world of hoops and our own Circle City is hosting the NCAA Men’s Final Four. (No need to make any IU b-ball comments below, please and thank you.)

So, what does any of this have to do with professional development? A lot actually stick with me here, even if you’re not a sports nut like myself, I think you’ll still appreciate this analogy.

  • Kelly Gets Fit in City: Reformed by the Pilates Reformer

Published: March 10, 2010 by Kelly Young Categories: Lifestyle & Wellness Comments: 0

I don’t know about anyone else, but I think the Pilates Reformer resembles a torture apparatus, with its cables, bars, straps, pulleys, strings and its sliding platform. So, when IndyHub’s very own Molly Chavers, an instructor with Invoke, invited me to try it out as part of my weekly challenge, I was feeling a bit unnerved. As I headed into the room with the Reformer and saw Molly smiling and cheerful, I figured it couldn’t be that bad. Fortunately, I was right.

The contraption can look daunting, but Molly was nice enough to explain the sophisticated system of springs, straps and pulleys... read on

  • Suz in the City: Revisiting Beef & Boards

Published: March 8, 2010 by Suzanne Flynn Categories: Lifestyle & Wellness, Networking & Social Comments: 0

There is something different to do in Indianapolis (that’s not new but may be forgotten) called Beef & Boards. I had gone there years and years ago (as a child) with my parents and remembered having a good time.

When my girlfriend, Kelly, asked if Bryan and I would like to go see The Foreigner at Beef & Boards, we jumped at the chance. Bryan said his parents would drive up from Columbus, IN, to see a show and have dinner with friends. He remembered them enjoying it.

Kelly, Stephen (her hubbie), Bryan and I were off on a “new” adventure. We arrived at our table of 4 (which was fairly... read on

  • The Great Green Hope - It’s Time to Get Connected

Published: March 1, 2010 by Ryan Puckett Categories: Civic Engagement, Sustainability Comments: 0

Once upon a time, there was a new city emerging in America’s Heartland. The city grew quickly and became the state capital—the only state capital located directly in the center of its state. A Scottish architect designed the city, originally a one-square-mile plan. His plan included a large circular commons in the middle of the city with two major streets running north/south and east/west and the city’s first transportation plan was conceived.

Of course, the city is Indianapolis and those streets are Meridian and Market. Transportation has always been integral to the success of the Circle... read on

  • You Don’t Know Jack: I dumped myself on Valentine’s Day

Published: February 18, 2010 by Jill Thixton Categories: Networking & Social Comments: 0

The guy next to me is reading playboy on US Airways flight 3032 from Washington DC to Indianapolis. The driver of a pretty nice shiny black town car doused himself in what I imagine Sex Panther smells like prior to driving me to the airport. I dumped myself on Valentine's Day.

I'm not quite sure what irony really means, so I'll look it up.

    Synonyms:

    • Satire
    • Paradox
    • Sarcasm
    • Mockery
    • Insincerity

Interesting, I had no idea what irony really meant until just now. I think I thought it meant something more like a coincidence.

Well then, I guess it's not ironic that... read on

  • Kelly Gets Fit in the City: Wii that was a fun workout

Published: February 15, 2010 by Kelly Young Categories: Lifestyle & Wellness Comments: 0

A week filled with snow storms and cancelled school seemed like an easy excuse for me not to go out in the cold and find a new weekly class to try. However, mid-week I felt guilty about not holding true to my challenge of doing a new fitness class each week. So, I decided to make up my own fitness class (with the help of my kids and their Wii).

The Wii and Wii Fit was a gift from Santa, and let me tell you, if he was watching, he would’ve wet his red Santa suit from laughing so hard. I’m sure I looked as ridiculous as I felt flailing, spinning and gyrating in my living room to the Wii Fit... read on

  • Suz in the City: I Guess I’m a Hillbilly?

Published: February 12, 2010 by Suzanne Flynn Categories: Networking & Social Comments: 0

I was watching one of my favorite shows, House, last week, and one of the main characters encountered an opossum in his tub. As this opossum is referenced here and there for the remainder of the episode, my husband walks into our room.

I said, Hey, check this out! They’re mispronouncing possum on this show! Then, as if perfectly timed with our conversation, one of the characters mentioned the OH-Possum. I had a hearty laugh while Bryan only looked at me quizzically. He said that in Indiana, we call them possum because it’s the hick way of doing it. I guess we’re too lazy to pronounce the... read on
