Kelly Gets Fit in City: Wii that was a fun workout

A week filled with snow storms and cancelled school seemed like an easy excuse for me not to go out in the cold and find a new weekly class to try. However, mid-week I felt guilty about not holding true to my challenge of doing a new fitness class each week. So, I decided to make up my own fitness class (with the help of my kids and their Wii).

The Wii and Wii Fit was a gift from Santa, and let me tell you, if he was watching, he would’ve wet his red Santa suit from laughing so hard. I’m sure I looked as ridiculous as I felt flailing, spinning and gyrating in my living room to the Wii Fit games my kids picked out for us to play.

We started by creating our profiles (a Mii). I had to enter my height, weight and age and then we did a few quick tests to check BMI and balance. I won’t tell you the “Wii Fit Age” I was given – or describe my Mii profile; but I will tell you that according to the Wii Fit, I’ve got a lot more than the bothersome 5-8 pounds I’ve been fighting to lose and my balance is less than desirable.

The Wii Fit has more than 40 activities and exercises to choose from. My kids chose the Aerobics and Balance Games for us to play (they were bored with the Strength Training and Yoga activities so I’ll have to try that on my own). For an hour or so (I actually lost track of time), we ran, hula hooped, boxed, walked across a tightrope, avoided getting beamed in the head by a soccer ball, skied, ski jumped and slalomed. I didn’t really break a sweat, but I did have fun. My abs got a mini-workout from all the laughing we did as we each took our turn on the Wii Fit Board. We played long enough to earn Fit Credits that gave us additional exercises, but we haven’t tried those yet.

As a mom, I appreciate that it gets my kids off the couch and gets them moving, but I’m not totally convinced that Wii Fit will help me swim longer, ride longer or run faster in my next triathlon. We certainly had fun though!
