Suz in the City: Times Is Tough
1/27/2010
I know it’s a bad economic time to be looking for a new job. I know that our fair President said we would never go above 8% unemployment if we passed the giant stimulus bill. Well, here we are. Many of the same people who were without a job last year at this time, are without a job this year, too.
Indyhub is one great way to expand your horizons and look for other opportunities. Continue to attend the events sponsored by Indyhub, and you might find someone who can network to find you a job.
I have noticed that in order to receive “unemployment” from the government, the regulations are too fast and loose. It should take more than simply e-mailing one’s resume to 5 places for which he/she isn’t qualified!
I wish that those with educations, experience, and a little gumption would realize that sometimes working a job that might seem “beneath” them is better than not working at all.
One friend comes to mind. He graduated with a degree from Indiana University in the start of the worst economic downfall since the Depression. After not finding ample employment, he washed dishes. Yes, a brand-new, let-me-show-you-my-awesome-
education, young man started washing dishes.
When things progressed, he was let go by the failing restaurant. He has been trying to find an opportunity to start a career, but when the property tax bill arrived last week, he realized that he had to do something. He then started working at a fast food restaurant.
It’s not the sexiest job in the world, but when jobs are scarce, I think potential employers will look at a person’s job history. If I were interviewing two people, I would choose the one who decided that working SOMEWHERE was better than working NOWHERE.
Times are tough, but Americans are tougher. If you are unemployed, sign up for Indyhub membership, attend some events, and at the very least: get a job doing something!
Suzanne Flynn hails from Noblesville, IN, and has resided in Indianapolis since graduating from Indiana University. Her unique view of the world stems from the combination of life experience and a strangeness she has possessed since birth. By day, Suzanne is an account manager and a board member for the Heritage Place of Indianapolis who prides herself on a good hug or a truly tasty grilled cheese. She is one of four daughters, the aunt to 9 beautiful children, and the happy wife of Bryan Flynn. If you see Suzanne on the street please avoid poking her with sticks or other sharp objects-- this just angers her.
