Introducing: Kelly Gets Fit in the City.

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? I’m hoping that’s the case with this new fitness challenge I’m going to attempt. Hi, I’m Kelly Young – a triathlete and a FitCity mom, which may sound impressive, but while I am proud to say I completed an Olympic Triathlon this summer, I still have those pesky 10 pounds (plus a few) that I can’t seem to shake. And while I may write about healthy habits through my work with FitCity and the FitCity Moms Blog, I don’t necessarily follow them. In fact, if you read some of my posts you’ll learn about my (failed attempt) at giving up Diet Cherry Coke. I also challenged myself to eat the recommended five fruits and vegetables daily for a week (sadly I learned that corn isn’t really a vegetable and fruit-flavored candy didn’t really count as a fruit).

So, why this new challenge? After training for four months for the triathlon (which, by the way I’ve become a big fan of the sport), I realized I needed another fitness challenge – and a goal to set and accomplish. I also decided that I needed something new to keep me motivated.

In my quest to find my next challenge, I’ve looked into everything from Hot Yoga to Muscle Boot Camp. I’ve discovered fitness classes such as Cycle Pump, TRX Suspension Training, Hip Hop Hustle, Step Fusion, Rock Wall Climbing and BOSU. During the triathlon training I was so focused on swimming, biking and running that I didn’t realize there was so much more out there. Including, Yoga classes at Invoke, taught by Indy Hub’s very own, Molly Chavers.

So, what’s the official challenge? I’m going to try a new fitness class or activity at least once a week – and because this is “Gettin’ Fit in the City” I will be trying new places all around Indy. To keep me honest, I’m going to blog weekly about my experience. I mean, I’m sure I can’t make up some of the things I bet I’ll learn and experience through this challenge, ie. as a non-Yoga person the only pose I’ve ever heard of is the Downward Facing Dog, but I haven’t a clue how to do it.

Can I do this challenge? I don’t know, but I didn’t think I could do a triathlon at first and I did it.

I could certainly use your help. If you have any suggestions on where or what I should try, please let me know. I’m going into this new challenge with an open mind and a bottle of Advil for the sore muscles I bet I find along the way. Again, what doesn’t kill me will just may make me stronger, right?!?

Try This
Chris Brown (no, not THAT Chris Brown...), teaches an AMAZING kickboxing class on Monday nights at the Athenaeum YMCA. It's from 5:30pm - 6:30pm every Monday night. But, come quick, because Chris has better things in store for himself come 2010 - like earning a neuroscience degree at IU. Alane
